Fiesta de la Mama negra.
Iba camino al mercado cerrado de
Latacunga cuando me doy cuenta de que el desfile de la Mama Negra había
comenzado y busque un sitio donde observar el desfile, había pasado todo el dia
sin comer pero mis ganas de presenciar este desfile fueron mas.
La fiesta de la mama negra es una
mezcla de culturas indígena, española y africana. Observar esta fiesta que se
realiza solamente en la ciudad de Latacunga es llenarse la mente y el corazón
de las expresiones culturales de un pueblo hacia la Virgen de la Merced a la
cual le rinden homenaje por sus favores recibidos.
La virgen de la Merced es llamada
la patrona del volcán. La fiesta de la mama negra se la realiza dos veces al
año, la primera que se realiza el 24 de Septiembre que es realizada por todos
sus devotos.
La segunda fiesta es realizada la
primera semana de Noviembre en las fiestas de Independencia de Latacunga, en el
cual los personajes son elegidos por su popularidad y labores que han realizado
en la ciudad.
Entre los personajes que existen
están los Huacos que son los llamados brujos que realizan la limpia a las
personas con ruda, trago y cigarro ellos son los que se encuentran al principio
de cada comparsa este ritual tiene un valor de $1.
El ángel de la estrella que
representa a San Gabriel Arcángel que va montado en un caballo vestido de
blanco.
El Rey Moro el que adorna la
procesión, el abanderado que parece un militar con una bandera a cuadros, el
Capitán que va con espada en mano y bien uniformado.
El ashanguero que es representado
por los mas fuertes llevan en la espalda una canasta con alimentos, un cerdo,
cuyes, licores que van a ser repartidos al final cuando se realice la fiesta.
Me sorprendió que hayan niños
cargando su canasta en una demostración de fe hacia la virgen de la Merced.
Había un personaje que iba
recitando coplas a las personas una vez que terminaba le daba de beber un licor
preparado de frutas que me toco probar y tenía muy buen sabor.
No sabía cuanto iba a durar el
desfile y al momento de preguntar me indicaron que todo depende del numero de
comparsas que se presenten, la fe de las personas es grande Latacunga me lo
demostró.

begun and I looked for a place to observe the parade, I had spent the whole day
without eating but my desire to witness this parade was more.
This celebration of la mama negra
is a mixture of indigenous, Spanish and African cultures. To observe this
festival that takes place only in the city of Latacunga is to fill the mind and
heart of the cultural expressions of a people towards the Virgen de la Merced
to which they pay homage for their favors received.
The Virgen de la Merced is called
the patron saint of the volcano. The celebration of la Mama Negra is performed

parade was going to last and when I asked about this, people told me that
everything depends on the number of comparsas that show up, the faith of the
